On our recent cruise on Celebrity Summit in Alaska, a helicopter to dog sledding on a glacier excursion was $700-$800 per person through the cruise line as well as through 3rd party tour booking platforms and direct through the tour operators. NOT to say this isn’t worth every penny - because this is certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but if you’re like us, and you’re on a budget (as a trip to Alaska can be pretty expensive the way it is) and if you’re traveling with a big party or with kids, then, you may be looking for a sled dog experience that isn’t quite as pricey, but still just as exciting and memorable.

Enter Seavey’s Ididaride Sled Dog Tours in Seward, Alaska. Seavey’s has a helicopter to the glacier dog sledding tour, as well as a wilderness dog sled and tour. Now I will say - in pricing out Seavey’s heliopter/dog sledding tour and where the pricing stands today - they do have a bit of a better deal than through the cruise lines and some of the other tour operators for thee types of tours in Alaska. We booked the Wilderness Dog Sled Ride & Tour and it was substantially less at $109 per person.

This is a very well-organized tour that they operate multiple times daily - so there are plenty of options as far as time slots. The tour is 1.5 hours total from beginning to end, and it is broken down into a few different parts:

  1. You arrive at Seavey’s Ididaride and check-in at the check-in cabin counter.

  2. You are led back by a tour guide on a very short gravel nature trail to the kennel area as a group.

  3. The tour guide/musher goes over a few facts about the dogs and a brief history of the Iditarod race.

  4. The mushers break you out into groups of about 6 to 8 people, and lead you to your “sled” and dog team.

  5. The mushers hook your sled dog team up to your sled (and some of the dogs will even hop up on the sled say hello! (As seen in our video)

  6. You’re off! The dogs pull your sled through 2 miles of really beautiful Alaskan woods - with a few stops along the way where the dogs can take a moment to cool down and the musher can answer any questions you might have.

  7. You return to the kennel area where you get to have a meet and greet with all of the friendly dogs on your team!

  8. You’re led back to the puppy area! Here you get to holds cuddle the adorable, tiny Alaskan husky puppies!

  9. Finally you are led into the large cabin right near the puppy area for an interactive Iditarod gear demonstration and more detailed facts about the musher and dogs during the Iditarod race and all that they have to do for a safe and successful race, before being released from the tour.
